The Kuutar Garden
Jakob Kudsk Steensen
Oulu2026
On view until 30 November 2026
In The Kuutar Garden, artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen has transformed an underground space in Oulu into a spectral garden where light, sound and movement guide the visitor through shifting plant-based environments. This living virtual ecosystem brings together years of ecological research, botanical archives and stories of endangered plants.
The work draws on plant collections, seed archives and conservation research, including the endangered aquatic plant Hippuris tetraphylla. It also incorporates a virtual reconstruction of Oulu’s Botanical Garden pyramids, where fragments of decades of botanical knowledge are reassembled for visitors to explore. Wander through and reflect on the delicate connections between nature, memory and conservation.
The Kuutar Garden is a production of Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture, programmed by Claudia Woolgar. We are proud to have provided support for interdisciplinary research and development.
